Cann House Care Home Lay Representative Report
The “Something Someone Told Me” project is a joint initiative delivered by Plymouth City Council and Healthwatch Plymouth to gather thoughts, views and ideas from residents, relatives and providers of local care homes.
It allows Healthwatch Plymouth to have conversations with residents and their relatives of local care homes that covers aspects of the ‘My Home Life Programme’.
Healthwatch Plymouth also sought feedback from care home providers and managers to give them a say on the challenges they face in delivering the programme.
Feedback is gathered around five key themes:
- Maintaining identity
- Creating community
- Shared decision making
- Improving health and healthcare
- Promoting a positive culture.
On the 27th February 2025 Cann House Care Home was visited by two lay representatives of the Healthwatch Plymouth Volunteer Team. This report summarises insights from resident conversations with our lay representatives, as well as provider feedback, focusing on the five key themes above.
Summarised Key Findings
- Although Cann House Care Home is set in beautiful surroundings, it is looking dated.
- Residents are offered a range of activities and experiences, and the activity coordinator is proactive and working hard in the home.
- That staff were kind and listened but there was often a long wait before a response was made to ringing the bell, and another long wait when requesting medication or equipment.
- Loneliness appears to be an issue for residents and may be due to their health conditions i.e. dementia.
- Several names on resident doors were incorrect.
Summarised Key Recommendations
- To check all names on resident room doors as a matter of urgency.
- To hold a daily staff briefing, if this is not already implemented.
- To investigate and shorten the length of time between a resident requesting medication and that medication being administered.
