Drake Nursing Home Lay Representative Report
The “Something Someone Told Me” project is a joint initiative delivered by Plymouth City Council and Healthwatch Plymouth to gather thoughts, views and ideas from residents, relatives and providers of local care homes.
It allows Healthwatch Plymouth to have conversations with residents and their relatives of local care homes that covers aspects of the ‘My Home Life Programme’.
Healthwatch Plymouth also sought feedback from care home providers and managers to give them a say on the challenges they face in delivering the programme.
Feedback is gathered around five key themes:
- Maintaining identity
- Creating community
- Shared decision making
- Improving health and healthcare
- Promoting a positive culture.
In July 2025, Drake Nursing Home Home was visited by lay representatives of the Healthwatch Plymouth Volunteer Team. This report summarises insights from resident conversations with our lay representatives, as well as provider feedback, focusing on the five key themes above.
Summarised Key Findings:
- Residents with advanced dementia appeared well supported by experienced nursing staff and specialist services where required.
- A varied programme of activities is provided by two dedicated Activities Coordinators.
- Staff appeared caring, patient and focused on residents' best interests.
- Meals are freshly prepared on site and residents' nutritional needs are well supported.

- No specific recommendations were identified during the visit.
- Continue to maintain the high standard of nursing care and resident support.
- Continue encouraging communication with families regarding residents' care and wellbeing.
